Constellations
ONE RELATIONSHIP. INFINITE POSSIBILITIES.

Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper, meet at a party and go for a drink, or perhaps they don’t. Having fallen madly in love, they begin a relationship that eventually veers off course. A chance encounter brings them back together, or maybe it reveals that Marianne is now engaged to someone else and that’s that. Or it might be Roland who’s engaged. Maybe Marianne and Roland will be together forever, or maybe their time will be tragically short.

Nick Payne’s Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it’s also about quantum multiverse theory, love and honey.

“The nearest I’ve come across in ages to a play that feels heaven-sent.” MATT WOLF, The New York Times

“The phrase ‘emotionally satisfying’ is rarely seen alongside that of ‘experimental drama’ – which makes Nick Payne’s arresting, intelligent new play Constellations all the more exciting.” DAVID BENEDICT, Variety

“Constellations gets into your head and under your skin with an immediacy that sometimes tickles and often hurts.” BEN BARNSLEY, The New York Times

“A singular astonishment, at once eloquent and mysterious.” JOHN LAHR, The New Yorker

Constellations had its world premiere at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, Sloane Square, London on January 13, 2011. The American premiere of Constellations was produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2014 starring Ruth Wilson as Marianne and Jake Gyllenhaal as Roland. The Canadian premiere was a co-production between the Centaur Theatre Company and Toronto’s Canadian Stage Company in 2016. We are excited to be staging this brilliant piece of theatre in Prince Edward County in March!
